Le Mas nestles at 2,950 feet above sea level, between two mountain ranges. The fresh air and southern exposure make it a delightful place to visit, where you can enjoy many walks, hikes, and the refreshing charm of the Gironde River, once vital to the village’s economy. History and heritage are also in abundance: Roman vestiges, a Romanesque church, many wayside chapels, along with a castle and the ruins of a keep, all testaments to a very busy medieval life, as Le Mas was on the border between the counties of Provence and Nice. Two hamlets are attached to Le Mas, Les Sausses and Les Tardons.

MUST-SEE SIGHTS:

- Saint Sébastien chapel (The Moya Chapel):
The interior of the Saint Sébastien chapel in Le Mas, officially unveiled in October 2019, has been entirely decorated by Nice artist Patrick Moya.
On the inner walls and ceiling of this chapel, the artist has painted a mural that tells the story of the life of San Sebastian, a tale that resonates with the village’s history dating back to Roman times, as well as with the artist’s own world and his research in the realm of contemporary art.

- Notre Dame church. In the Middle Ages, the Notre Dame church was an important pilgrimage site, with devout travelers coming from all over the country to honor the relic of the head of Saint Arnoux and a bone fragment from one of his arms. North of the building, numerous Roman tile shards attest to the past presence of a Gallo-Roman-era settlement.

- Seigniorial chateau. The Le Mas chateau, today privately owned, is a typical Provencal residence. The date of 1742 engraved on the pediment of the main entrance makes it possible to pinpoint the time the chateau was built. The history of castles and chateaux in Le Mas is not limited to this edifice, as the ruins of a medieval fortress can be found on the rocky peak above the current chateau.
