Poet and novelist Ivan Bunin – the first Russian to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1933, spent many years in Grasse.
Poet and novelist Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin – the first Russian to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1933 – was born in 1870 in Voronezh to poor but noble family. He spent his childhood and adolescence in natural environments, which left a deep impression on him that would last all his life.
In 1901, he was awarded the Pushkin Prize by the Russian Academy for his talents as a poet and the quality of his translations. But Bunin was first and foremost a writer of prose. He shared his aesthetic and philosophical points of view with his friend Chekhov and admired Tolstoy, with whom he had a common concern for the people. He revived the classical realist tradition of Turgenev, from whom he inherited a pure, precise, and melodious language.

Having condemned the revolution, Bunin fled to Paris in 1920 to take refuge, then made a home in Grasse from 1923 to 1945.
He died in Paris in 1953.

There are unbreakable bonds between the creative activity of Ivan Bunin and the City of Grasse.
Bunin was immediately captivated by the city, which he believed was blessed of all things worthy: an altitude offering a panorama of infinite horizons of both sea and mountain; air that was at once mild, fragrant, and stimulating; and an immutable old town that was also populous and bustling.
